Nine miles south of Tucson, Arizona, standing in the desert like a white-robed sentinel, is one of the world’s greatest missions: Mission San Xavier del Bac. Native Americans call it “ the white dove of the desert.” Painted as it appeared in the summertime dusk of the Sonoran Desert, the mission almost seems to float in a delicate, ethereal haze. Wherever displayed, the sky colors change with the changing room light.
